ANTHROP 1AB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Human Genetic Variation, Forensic Anthropology, Biomedicine
Document Summary
The race concept: what does genetics have to say. Experience within age and dna, taking a perspective of evolutionary view. By the time of egyptians classifying individuals by skin colour. Could adopt cultural habits and be seen as part of their particular group. Concept of race persists- still see it in contemporary culture. By trying to classify humans into groups it can reinforce privilege and oppression. Human groups can be classified into groups based on physciolgical, morphological features. Humans can be divisible into discrete populations. But, humans are complex- in terms of biology that trying to separate this our is no useful to talk about human variation. Trying to use the term race is not an accurate way to describe what we see on a biological level and what is observed. Eventually extended by associating some aspects with intelligence and morality. This approach extended into the 20th century. Group individuals based on observable aspects and tying them to personality traits.
