ANTHROP 1AB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Social Stratification, Samuel George Morton, Stephen Jay Gould
Document Summary
October 27, 2016- anthropology of race and racism. Our culture has bought into the notion that race exists. The daily usage and reinforcements of problematic terms leads credence that race is biological. Refers to the presumed hereditary characteristics of a group of people. Imagined as an ascribed status- something that you are born into. If you are born into it, its static and unchanging. Belief that certain traits will lead to certain traits in an individual. Often use skin colour to separate people into groups. Colour of eyes as a physical marker for racial categories. Our cultures belief in race has consequences- because we live in a society that we"ve been enculturated to believe that it is a biological category. Used erroneously as a form of social stratification and legal classification. Giving validity to a culturally constructed category. Used as a form of social stratification. Unequal access to 1)wealth or economic resources; 2) power 3) prestige (respect and honour)
