Race and ethnicity are two different things. Race refers to the presumed hereditary characteristics of a group of people. It"s a social construct and it"s made up. Imagined as an ascribed status, its imagined as something you are born with and that you cannot change. Race is also erroneously as a form of social stratification and legal classification. Examples: notion of class and categorizations of race. Certain classes are going to have greater access to power or wealth. Intensifies as communities become large, develop agriculture and develop the necessity for occupational specialization (different jobs) Capitalism increased forms of social hierarchies like class. How people are perceived on like what your standing is in society. Max webber- argues that in western societies we base people things like educational attainment, occupation, religions or economics. Occupations- how we value jobs that require intense schooling and perceived brain power.
