Long term settlements - 2000 - 5000 individuals. A group of states operating under some type of control. Main role of chiefs is to unite lesser chiefs. Class division determines a set of privileges rather than biological. Ex. not dependant on things like age. All people are not spiritually equal - gods have established a hierarchy of groups. Jajmani system: system of reciprocal services and caste interdependence. Jajman: patron provides grain or service to kamin. Kamin: workers -provide traditional occupational service to jajman. Landowners: receive the product of the peasants labour. Over time the intensi cation of trade and specialization came a growth of middle class. Groups with common interests could band together to protect wages. Control of truth: possible basis for power = control of knowledge and information is the control of truth itself. Hegemony: ruling class manipulates culture to ensure that their values and morals and beliefs are the accepted norm within that society.
