Use other culture images when not connected to that culture (blackface, modelling in headdresses) As theft : under conditions when people feel there culture is threatened or misinterpreted, native americans with models wearing headdresses do not know the meaning or tribe. Ex: indigenous material culture or the people themselves, by europeans appropriate bodies for our entertainment, caging and putting indigenous people on display, sara baartman: khoi khoi woman from south africa put in theatres throughout. London, promoted as exotic and savage, treated like animal & bought & sold like animal (died on streets in 20s) Cultural appropriation: can lead to production of essentialist representation (exam) of a group, ex: shar were seen as exotic & savage in museums, fuels ethnocentrism & racism towards non-western groups. Other side: some earth walkers believe they have respect for the culture & do not look to make money off of the cultural traditions. We build own culture from cultural appropriation.
