Cholera is a relatively small part of a large package of diarrheal diseases including rhotavirus, typhoid fever etc. Cholera does come in epidemic form; one year it may not be as big a portion of the diarrheal disease mortality as it is in other years. Pathogenesis: cholerae colonize small intestine secrete potent enterotoxin. Enterotoxin binds to cell channels in small intestine massive fluid loss: prompts the intestine to lose fluid. Toxic effects last 20 - 24 hours: not reversible.
