Temple had shape of the pure land- iconography of ground plan, bird w long tail and wings on the side, phoenix. 2 statues on the roof, bronze phoenix sculptures. Main hall in the center flanked by open porches. Sculpture of amida buddha made of wood- special technique of assembling 53. Jocho amida buddha- 12-12 wood blocks and then carving it (piece elements together) Wood work was highly developed in japan (and wood structure) Dome above the sculpture, carved out of wood and suspended from ceiling to highlight important place. Colours faded today, once would have been gold and colourful in the room. Buddha sitting in meditation pose, mudra of meditation, calm face and posture. Buddha sits on lotus flower, has a nimbus behind his head and an aureola around that. The tale of genji- a closer look.
