Originally part of a network of fortresses created all over japan meant to continually unify the regions. Designed to impress and send a message of the power of the shogun. Defensive fortification; makes use of the surrounding land. 15m high stone walls; ensured enemies couldn"t seen the castle from the base of those walls. 3 moats, 84 gates, and many wandering passageways intended to confuse intruders. The whole castle and the tallest structure symbolized the shogun"s might. Designed in the 16thc by the daimyo (feudal lord) terumasa (patron) and wanted the castle to have a similar design to the emperor"s castle in kyoto. The central tower is surrounded by three smaller towers, which are connected to one another. Upward turned corners and the use of gables are characteristic of japanese architecture.
