ARTHIST 2A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Julia Margaret Cameron, Digital Photography, Albumen Print
Document Summary
Photography is the most commonly seen form of art. The vast majority of photography produced today is digital. We are in a historic stage where it is an entire immaterial practice. In the past you need a number of materials and tools to engage with photography. It is the first type of image making that is not made by following a series of options that an artist must make. Photography has created a set of imaging practices that go far beyond just merely taking pictures (i. e. x-ray is a form of photography, photography is used in science). It is a technological advancement but it is treated and classified as art. There is a wide spectrum of different types of photography. The photo was made on a plate covered in glass and metal, it creates a unique photograph because you can only make one (not a negative) and the exposure time is insanely long, 30 minutes.
