Sometimes seen as the father of history - but wasn"t too concerned with accuracy! Predates socrates, peloponnesian war, lives slightly after persian wars ( rst series of great battles). Traveller, thorn-in-the-side of the powers that be. Comes from the middle of nowhere - largely greek territory with persian thugs. Local tyrant didn"t like herodotus, chases him out of town. Herodotus has actually seen a lot of places and things, makes an effort to go hear others" stories - from the horse who met the horse"s mouth. Places that treated herodotus well come across well in his writings, while places that treated him badly usually show up badly (ex. Herodotus pumped up his stories to be a little larger than life (ex. Something has shifted in the way herodotus tells stories - there are no gods. Tend to be based in the ordinary human world without the intervention of the divine.
