The french revolution lead to the whole issue off human rights exploding into history. It provided a model for national liberation and made the people supreme. The sovereignty of the people was emphasized whereas the glorious revolution of 1688 emphasized the sovereignty of the parliament. The french revolution gave revolution an honorific name, the will of the people was above that of the king. The idea of liberty, equality and fraternity, promised a universal redemption, an idea that was appealing to all throughout the world. Critiques of the french revolution cite secular fanaticism and the reign of terror as resulting detriments to the french cause. Napolean"s imposition of liberal ideals of recalcitrant"s cultures was yet another point made. The french revolution becomes a template for those that follow: the american, etc. He argued of the perils of advancing civilization, and was the first modern thinker (arguing against modernizaiton) to do so.
