ARTSSCI 2A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Industrialisation, On Liberty, Curbed
Document Summary
The thirty years war was the most violent in history. As such, it was generally thought that secular, neutral authorities were better for humanity and religion was best thought of as a series of private beliefs that had neither the capacity nor right to use force. This was a serious blow against several religious orders. The monopoly of moral authority slowly moved away from religious institutions and religious ideas. We then come to moral ideas that are purely secular, a product of human freedom rather than being grounded in religion. One such was kantian morality, that moral ideas were those legislated by rational beings and are valid for the whole of the human race. Even religious people took these to heart, for e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple, take ma(cid:396)ti(cid:374) luthe(cid:396) ki(cid:374)g(cid:859)s (cid:272)all fo(cid:396) hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) (cid:396)ights. The(cid:396)e(cid:859)s little dou(cid:271)t that he (cid:271)ased this o(cid:374) religious authority, but used kantian terminology, the universal moral right to freedom which was defensible by religion and reason.
