Signals converge in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. Energy expenditure (4 main variables that can be altered: basal metabolic rate, thermic effect of food, exercise, thermoregulation. Rq table to calculate basal metabolic rate. Basal metabolic rate is a major contributor to amount of calories used everyday. Thermoregulation is controlled, but doesn"t come to play that often. Basal metabolic rate & resting energy expenditure: expenditure for respiration, heartbeat, renal function, blood circulation, measured in person in post absorptive state, supine, motionless, thermoneutral environment (bee) Maintaining processes that use atp to maintain homeostasis is main contributors for basal metabolic rate. Infusing stable isotope and looking at diuretic water looking at loss of label: another way to measure basal metabolic rate. Thermic effect of food: energy expenditure comes from processing different foods.
