Document Summary
The metabolic shift learned in the previous model about bacteria can shift from glucose to lactose metabolism is an example of a highly regulated process. It is highly regulated so that bacteria are able to quickly upregulate the expression of genes that produce lactose-metabolizing enzymes when glucose is no longer available and lactose is the main nutrient present. In this case, the control of the enzyme is regulated at the transcriptional level. There are two important cues that influence this regulation: the glucose levels and the presence of lactose. As e. coli transition from glucose to lactose, there is an accompanying increase in the levels of - galactosidase and lactose permease enzymes. These two genes are not expressed until glucose is fully absent from the growth medium. Another important point is that these enzymes are only detectable once lactose metabolism begins, so there must be link.
