Liver: stem cells can divide indefinitely, not the case for all cells. Telomerase as a solution: telomerase is expressed in germ cells, embryonic stem cell, cancer cells, telomerase adds extension of telomeres to the chromosomes as it telomere shrinks due too division, but (cid:373)ost so(cid:373)ati(cid:272) (cid:272)ells do(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ake telo(cid:373)erase. Visualizing telomeres: fluorescence in situ hybridization (fish, red is the centromeric dna and green is the telomeric dna, brighter signal means longer telomeres. Longer telomeres: wildtype cells with functional telomerase from normal mice, mice are youthful, shorter telomeres, mutant cells with no telomerase from null mice, these mice have accelerated ageing due to lack of telomerase (accelerated shrinkage of telomeres)
