Document Summary

Altering sister chromatids or nonhomologous chromosomes can have significant consequences. Nondisjunction during meiosis affects the embryo and throughout our life. Nondisjunction during mitosis affects some cells and can lead to cancer. Ovary and testes produce gametes through meiosis which are haploid (n) where n=23. Once fertilized the zygote divides multiple times and become diploid (2n=46) During meiosis homologous chromosomes must separate from each other. During mitosis sister chromatids must separate correctly. Meiotic spindle distributes chromosomes to daughter cells without error. Different ways gametes develop during prenatal, prepubescent and post prepubescent. Produce 1 individual egg per individual stem cell. At birth, all mitotic daughter cells enter meiosis and stay arrested in meiosis i (until puberty is reached) things can go wrong since the meiotic eggs are arrested for so long. Some cells undergo apoptosis and other stays in prophase i. Individual cells that are ovulated post puberty pause in meiosis ii. Egg will only complete meiosis ii once fertilization is successful.
