Document Summary

All cells arise from preexisting cells by process of cell division. Fig 11. 1 two types of nuclear divisions occur in many species. Daughter cells are genetically identical to parent cell. Daughter cells (ova, sperm) are genetically different from parent cells. Reproduction in asexually reproducing species (unicellular): mitosis followed by cytokinesis, production of offspring that are genetically identical to parent. Repair and tissue repair: in multicellular species, wounds are healed via mitosis and cytokinesis. Chromosome: threadlike structures observed in dividing cells, made up of dna, single long. Dna double helix that is wrapped around proteins [histones] in organized manner, encodes genetic material. Gene: specific length of dna that codes for a specific protein or rna. Purpose of mitosis: to distribute parent cell"s genetic material to daughter cell in cell division. Prior to mitosis; chromosomes=copied, condense into compact structures, in mitosis- one chromosome goes to each daughter cell. Animals, fungi and plants: complete the cell cycle.
