Document Summary

Discovered the basic principle of heredity (law of segregation and the law of independent assortment) Heredity: inheritance, transmission of traits from parents to offspring. 2 hypotheses: blending inheritance (prominent hypothesis): traits observed in mother and father blend together to form traits observed in offspring. Ex. if giraffe stretched neck to get leaves from higher trees, the offspring would have longer- necks. Model organism: species where individuals are small, short lived, inexpensive to care for and able to produce large numbers of offspring and easy to manipulate experimentally. Conclusions drawn from model organisms can be applied to other species as well. Mendel chose the pea plant: inexpensive, easy to grow from seed, have relatively short reproductive cycle, produce reasonably large amt of seeds. = allows experiments over generations and data from large # of individuals. Peas can be self-pollinated or cross- able to control which parents were involved in mating, could arrange mating b/w individ that differed in easily recognizable traits.
