Goals of conservation biology: to offset the biodiversity crisis, to preserve individual species (species diversity, to sustain ecosystems (ecosystem diversity, to maintain genetic variability (genetic diversity) Questions probed by conservation biologists: what is happening to biodiversity. Endangered species act (esa) and international union for conservation of nature (iucn) classification: Endangered species: is in danger of extinction in all or a significant part of its habitat range, categorize a species as endangered or threatened, examples: giant pandas, gorillas, african elephants & asian elephants. Resources: agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, animal husbandry: your knowledge and training/ expertise on looking after the animals, medicinal sources (many medicinal sources are known from other cultures - ethnobotany) Vincristine is used in the treatment of leukemia. Vinblastin is used in the treatment of hodgkin"s disease. These drugs have provided over million dollars per year in income to several north america. Pharmaceutical companies, but unfortunately none of this money has been returned to madagascar.
