BIOLOGY 1M03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Trophy Hunting, Selective Breeding, Spontaneous Generation
Document Summary
Chapter 1- biology and the tree of life. Organism: an organism is a life form- a living entity made up of one or more cells which share a suite of five fundamental characteristics: Energy: organisms have to obtain and use energy to stay alive. Cells: organisms are made up of membrane- bound units called cells. Information: organisms process hereditary information encoded in genes, along with information they obtain from the environment. Replication: almost everything an organism does contributes to one goal: replicating itself. Evolution: organisms are the product of characteristics, and their population continues to evolve. Theory: a theory is an explanation for a very general class of phenomena or observations. Cell: a cells is a highly organized compartment that is bound by a thin, flexible structure called a cell/ plasma membrane and that contains concentrated chemicals in an aqueous solution. Examples: paramecium in pond water, pollen cells, breast cancer cells. Contain molecular information (dna) that encodes their physical attributes.
