Biology 1P03 Introduction
What is Biology?
Biology is the study of life
Why is Biology Important?
Helps you understand how your body functions
Allows you to become an informed citizen
Provides career opportunities
Enriches your appreciation of the earth and it's inhabitants
Characteristics of Living Things
Living things require and use materials and energy.

o Flow of energy & recycling of nutrients
Fig 1-4
o Organisms maintain relatively constant internal conditions Homeostasis
Living things, collectively, have the capacity to evolve.

o Antennae and eyes: living things respond to stimuli
Light, chemicals, pain, heat, motion, sound, hunger, touch, cold, gravity
o Gut: living things acquire nutrients
o Eggs: living things reproduce
Why is life so diverse?
The diverse forms found on earth are a result of evolution by the mechanism of natural selection.
Natural Selection is the basis of evolutionary change. (The 3 required things, living or non-living
they will change - evolution)
o Characteristics of individuals in a group vary. (Variation)
o Some characteristics help individuals survive and reproduce (Selection)
o Those that reproduce pass on these traits to future generations. (Heritable doesn't
have to be through genes)
