BIOLOGY 1P03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Homeostasis, Archaea, Eukaryote
Biology 1P03 Introduction
What is Biology?
• Biology is the study of life
Why is Biology Important?
• Helps you understand how your body functions
• Allows you to become an informed citizen
• Provides career opportunities
• Enriches your appreciation of the earth and it's inhabitants
Characteristics of Living Things
• Living things require and use materials and energy.
• Fig 1-3
o Flow of energy & recycling of nutrients
• Fig 1-4
o Organisms maintain relatively constant internal conditions – Homeostasis
• Living things, collectively, have the capacity to evolve.

• Fig 1-2 Properties of Life
o Antennae and eyes: living things respond to stimuli
▪ Light, chemicals, pain, heat, motion, sound, hunger, touch, cold, gravity
o Gut: living things acquire nutrients
o Eggs: living things reproduce
Why is life so diverse?
The diverse forms found on earth are a result of evolution by the mechanism of natural selection.
• Natural Selection is the basis of evolutionary change. (The 3 required things, living or non-living
they will change - evolution)
o Characteristics of individuals in a group vary. (Variation)
o Some characteristics help individuals survive and reproduce (Selection)
o Those that reproduce pass on these traits to future generations. (Heritable – doesn't
have to be through genes)
