During embryogenesis, formation of the inner cell mass leads to the early embryo. As the number of cells increase, they separate into one of the three germ layers: Cells throughout development must establish and maintain connections, allowing for formation of unified functions seen in organs and tissues. Ability of cells to recognize and associate with each, was demonstrated in 1907 by. Wilson using cells of two different species of sponges. The individual cells were separated apart using a fine mesh and then mixed together. It was seen that cells from the same species associated with each other while cells from different species did not associate with each other. In the 1950s, johannes holfreter performed a similar experiment using cells of a frog embryo. When ectodermal and mesodermal cells were mixed together, cells from like tissues recognized one another and associated. Associations even mimicked the organization seen in original embryo depending on tissue type.
