Document Summary

Objectives: review principles of primary structure of polypeptide, overview of properties of amino acid variable side chains (r-groups, describe chemical interactions essential to protein structure. A protein is a string of amino acids, a polypeptide chain or polymer of other small molecules. There is an unlimited number of molecular structures that proteins can assume: rna and dna assume a limited number of structures. Each protein has its own unique, defined structure that enables it to carry out a particular function. There is a diverse array of what proteins an look like: diversity in size and structure, shape and structure specifies function of the protein. Amino acids are attached in a linear array to create primary structure of the protein = a polypeptide. Peptide bonds connects the amino acids together to form a chain of amino acid residues: located between carboxyl group and amino group. 20 different amino acids that are incorporated into newly synthesized polypeptide.
