BIOLOGY 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Stamen, Product Rule, Dominance (Genetics)
Document Summary
Mendel was a priest who then got into the biological sciences. He began his work on trait inheritance in an edible pea plant known as pistum sativum. He later gave this up for bee keeping. He gathered 34 varieties of plants, and settled on 14 strains representing 7 individual traits. He designed his experiments to test the blending theory of heredity; traits of progeny were a mix of the characteristics had by the 2 parents. Progeny was believed to display intermediates from the parents. He created the scientific method": observations about phenomenon or process, develop an hypothesis, design a control experiment, collect data, compare observed and expected results, draw a conclusion. Controlled crosses btwn plants: pea plants contain both pollen-producing anther and egg-containing ovule and usually self-fertilize. A mature pod contains 5-7 peas each which results from a different fertilization event: pea plants are capable of cross pollination, where the pollen on one plants can fertilie the ovules of another.
