Secondary aim of determining benefit of treatment
More ascitic patients are more difficult to inject into portal vein due to risk of bleeding via
percutaneous injection
Measurements: bilirubin (lower to normalise) and albumin (raise to normalise) as measures of
liver function, CT scan to examine for ascites
Found that bilirubin and albumin improvements are mostly not sustained except for certain
patients
Found that a much higher number of stem cells injected are required due to the number of
hepatocytes normally in cells, however there needs to be a balance between in vitro
expansion of numbers versus functionality of cells
Future work
o Investigation of patient awaiting liver transplant
Deteriorating patients so it may act as a bridge to stem cell patients
Reversible acute liver failure cause to prevent deterioration into full liver failure
o Due to temporary (non-sustained) liver function improvement, this stem cell
transplantation is not likely to become a permanent solution but only a bridge to
lengthen lifespan while awaiting transplant

Apoptosis: how it works
Programmed cell death, getting dismantled from within to minimise damage and
disruption to neighbouring cells
General features
o Cell rounds up and detaches from neighbours
o Membrane remains intact
o Plasma membrane blebbing/pinching off "boiling membrane appearance"
o Cell contents remain contained
o Non-inflammatory phagocytic clearance of debris
