Ch. 10 distribution and abundance of populations and species. Arctic terns migrate to the south during the winter. Muskox migrate to higher elevations in winter to avoid deep snow. They also have guard hairs that are waterproof. Arctic terns and muskox are simialr: as climatic conditions change, food becomes scarce or harder to find and they move to a new area. Therefore reason for migration is the same. Population: group of individuals of a single species inhabiting an area limited by natural or human-imposed boundaries. Density /absolute density: number of individuals per unit abundance area. The physical environment limit the geographic distribution of species. Distribution of kangaroos (ie. not in northern australia) may not be determined by climate directly. Live at higher altitudes in the temperate forest and boreal forest in north america suggests it is confined to cool, moist habitats. Distributions of barnacles along an intertidal exposure gradient.
