Document Summary

Chem 1a03- theme 6 module 1 solubility and chemical. Identify the unique properties of water and the characteristics that lead to these properties. Apply the rules for solubility to predict formation of precipitates, and calculate molar solubility. Predict the direction in which an equilibrium proceeds. Solve quantitative equilibrium problems, including with the use of an ice table. Water is a polar molecule, a trait that allows it to solvolyze ions like sodium. In biological systems it allows water to be transported across cellular membranes, and it plays a role in the folding of proteins due to hydro phobic and hydrophilic amino acids interacting with water molecules. The polarity of water also determines what molecules tend to accumulate within an organism, as opposed to those which will pass through them. The polarity determines how molecules bind to receptors, and pays an important role in drug design.
