Document Summary

2. 2 water: a vital natural resource: 97. 5% of the world"s water is salt water. It also determines how molecules bind to receptors, and plays an important role in drug design as well as looking at ways to minimize exposure to substances that can have harmful side effects. We get energy back from solvating ions known as the solvation enthalpy. The energy is released when gas-phase ions come together to form a solid lattice: this latter energy is known as lattice enthalpy. If the solvation enthalpy is greater than the lattice enthalpy, a solid will dissolve in water. If the lattice enthalpy is greater, it won"t. 2. 7 solute properties and electrolytes: one interesting application of dissolved ions is the formation of solutions that can conduct electricity. These fully charged ions are very mobile in the solution and induce higher currents. If we were to measure the conductivity with a light bulb, strong electrolyte solutions result in a brighter light bulb.
