CHEM 2OA3 Lecture 6: Podcast 6 Proton NMR Multiplicity

120 views4 pages

Document Summary

Proton chemical shift: tells us about the environment of the protons. When a signal is observed in the h nmr, often it is split into multiple peaks. We can do integration to find out the number of h in each environment. In determining a structure, we want to know the connectivity patterns. To get connectivity is the most important thing to finish the structure. Triplet signal: all h are equivalent, but splitting of the peak tells us about how many h there are on the c next door, divided into three by presence of two h on. Doublet: 1 h on c next door, 1:1:1. Result from coupling to an appropriate number of neighbouring hydrogens. Multiplicity results from magnetic effects that protons have on each other. Energy gap depends on the spin of the electrons that are surrounding the nucleus. Depends on spin state of both neighbouring and own electrons.
