Document Summary

Emphasis of knowledge on development of art throughout the course. How art changes, and how it remains consistent. Guideline will be provided near the end of this week. Theatre is iconic and shorthand for greek culture. Form we are familiar with is developed in the 4th century. The round type develops around 350 bc. Heart of the theatre is the orchestra where actors perform drama or comedy. Behind the orchestra is a structure called the skene or stage building, when it first developed it was very simple, could hardly be called a building, possibly just a curtain. When theatre is born skene is simple structure that creates physical contrast for actors. As we move from late classical hellenistic roman periods the skene grows with respect to the theatre and become a monument to itself. Actors shift from performing in the orchestra to a raised platform in front of the skene.
