The study of past culture through the material they produced and left. What is archeological site: anywhere humans left remains. Feature: fied objects that cannot be easily removed from a site (many people use feature as excuse to define something when they don"t know what it is) Examples of feature: building, big carvings, graves, walls, hearts, structures (temples, houses) Artifacts: small objects that can be moved (ex. What is context: association of artifacts and features found within a particular area or layer and the relative position and relationship of this area or layer to the ones above and below it. The context finds are what allows us to interpret them and understand their function and meaning. All material culture is of interest (cheap or expensive) because it tells us about human activity and human value systems. Goal of archeology: to reconstruct the past different cultures. Archeology is divided by culture and period (egyptian: culture, medieval: period)
