Objective of greek sculpture shifts to naturalism. Accurate depiction of human form through functional anatomy. Sculpture made coherent, whole, believable through use of details. Compare stylistically to archaic kouros (600 bc) Kritios boy= representational, accurate anatomy, more realistic, but idealized. Position of body called contrapposto stance (counterpose)- more weight on one foot. Destruction of acropolis at athens by the persians. From 450 bc, acropolis is rebuilt under athenian general perikles. Monumental entrance to mark the shift from fortress to civic sanctuary. East cella: athena polias=athena protector of the city.
