CLASSICS 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Groin Vault, Trefoil Arch, Barrel Vault
Document Summary
Much of roman culture taken from others, mainly greek, but their engineering and architecture and to some extent, urban planning, are unique. Often faced with stone or brick, hiding the concrete core. Concrete was not the preferred aesthetic for romans, so they covered them. Roman walls were made of concrete, but faced with brick or stones. Concrete was the most important part, as it was the support. Arch was employed by the greeks in dry masonry, but to a limited extent. Lots of brick in italy, because there was lots of good clay in italy. Wooden forms are placed on a shelf, and concrete is poured over the supports and removed when dried. Sometimes covered in plaster and painted, so as to not have to look at the concrete. Made of concrete, but faced with a marble-like substance. An arch can be shaped, and extended into 3d shapes.
