They are not actually married: nothi(cid:374)g offi(cid:272)ial at the (cid:858)weddi(cid:374)g(cid:859, juno as enemy of rome, dido as cleopatra. Homeric allusion: the hero dallying with a woman. The end of dido= the end of carthage. Iarbas, a suitor, is threatening: hears the rumor of aeneas and dido and thinks that aeneas has taken over. Aeneas quickly obeys the orders of the gods. Dido loses control, confronts aeneas: blames him for the loss of his reputation with his neighbours. Aeneas replies without consolation: has no regret for leaving her, says that they were never officially proposed marriage to her.
