Now begins to be used to justify athenian mishaps. To put down rebellion: the ride of pericles, 450s: league turns to empire. The patrols become more concerned with signing up new members to the league. League expanded to over 200 members now which meant that the greek world was divided into two main camps. Peloponnesian league under sparta and athens expanding delian league. Athens dominate concern was raising money: athenian imperialism, 454: transfer of league treasury to athens- phoros. Where member contributions were held and stored. The level of tribute was increased and as it was there were more and more rebellions. Delian league had become the athenian empire. Imperial democracy: empire benefited athenian masses, and so democracy fuelled imperialism, empire promoted the power of the masses, and so empire fuelled democracy, the imperial, democratic city: public buildings, stelae, theatre, ceramics. Again athenians profiting from empire also governing the state: athenians increasing cultural and political domination.
