I will sing of heracles, the son of zeus and much the mightiest of men on earth. Thebes, the city of lovely dances, when the dark-clouded son of cronos had lain with her. Heres = great glory but also great suffering. A mortal of my blood will be born today who shall rule over all men -zeus, iliad 19. Greatest mortal son of zeus, will be their king. Oldest hero not genealogically oldest, but oldest in that he is the oldest in what people think of as. Heroes before many other things came to be. Not the first genealogically but first in people"s minds, first and greatest. Associated with many cities born in thebes (but many cities claim him / claim he"s travelled): argos, tiryns, thebes, and trachis (s. thessaly) where heracles dies, typical of heroes to not stay in one spot. Sculpture in asia he wields diamond which sometimes looks like thunderbolt, shows relation to zeus.
