Most ancient part of the vinaya is pratimoksa- the rules which govern the lives of monks and nuns. Pratimoksa recited in unison by monks every fortnight at confession ceremonies. Sangha ensures that everyone knows the rules, and confesses if they have broken them. Rule of the sangha is by consensus-> everyone must agree. Difficult to drive change and be a fast moving organization because. Everyone has to agree-> conservative and slow to change: you (cid:498)leave home. (cid:499) or (cid:498)go forth. (cid:499) A tonsure- master shaves your head and teaches you the basics. Novices observe ten precepts: 1-5 as for 5 precepts for laypeople. * monks cannot touch money or gold or silver. High beds-> sleep on a low/ simple bed.
