Helots of messenia: first spartan expansion- sparta very civilized by then, west,across taygetus mountains, conquest (and annexation) of extra-regional territory evidence for sophisticated state organization in 7th cent. : think woikeis of the gortyn system: sense of regional/ethical identity: messenians , messenians always liable to revolt, this completely shapes the development of spartan society. Both domestic and foreign practice: domestic- allows citizens to take attention away from production and focus on warrior training, ext. Military force can"t go too far away from home. Lycurgus- spartan lawgiver : reforms attributed to him, aimed at land holding reform, constitutional reform.
