Herculaneum was much closer to vesuvius than pompeii was (practically at the foot) Pliny the younger wrote a series of letter about his experience seeing the eruption of the vesuvius (his uncle pliny the elder adopted him which is why they have the same name) At a villa in bay of naples on the west of the bay (misenum) In his writings he never identifies vesuvius as a volcano. Most of the area around the coast of naples were villas of aristocracy. The whole area (bay of naples) was a very active area when it came to volcanoes and earthquakes. February 5th 62 ad earthquake in bay of naples and there is a famous carving of a recreation of the earthquake (lararium {household shrine})
