Cmst 2c03: lecture 17 (continuation from last week"s lecture) Aims to reconcile differences between interactionism and structuralism: bring these two together. Accommodates institutional structures and individual agency in combined model of social theory: media ecology (interacting with environments) Duality: structure, structured forms of action. All of our actions are structured in particular ways (structuration of individual agents) Print and premodern societies unified space-time people tended to interact in proximity. Electronic societies live and work across separated spatial/temporal dimensions. Altered forms of human interassociation: crossing space/time spheres. Decline of trust, but trust abstract systems: always encountering people new, don"t know them, we don"t build these relationships over a certain amount of years. Our everyday actions reproduce institutional structures that legitimate abstract: at mcmaster the female professors were making a significant amount less than male faculty. Systems tend to constrain us as individuals: not systems that we can accomplish very much. Enter into legal agreements and buy property (married women, ontario 1884/quebec1964)
