Document Summary

Medium is a very complex word with many meanings to it: forms/means of communication, eg: television, a. Eg: chicken wings-medium rather than hot or mild: an intervening substance or agency (agency chemical agent; mediates a process); something that comes in between us & the world, technology. Eg: the chairs mediate the room; they come between us & the environment of the room. Relationship b/w a technology & media; suggests that technology is to the medium what the brain is to the mind. Difference: brain=physical apparatus (like technology); the mind is how you use the physical apparatus (like a medium): light/energy. Eg: mcluhan talks about the lightbulb as a medium: a medium is anything that mediates. Expansion about what we believe mediates our experiences. For instance, we are also media as we impact our own experiences. Example: person that doesn"t smile; easily picked up upon as a behaviour. Non-verbal outputs of communication also seen as media.
