There"s something about soap operas that captivate the audience. There are characters and story arcs frequently require a familiarity with it. Lopez: adorno to the contrary, fans can even become politicized through their fannish engagement with commercial mass culture. Original cartoon drew upon east asian settings, themes, mythologies, while the characters were racially coded in ambiguous ways. 2: they were not flat out said they are asian, but it is interpreted and coded, they all seem asian. Lopez: the same skills and techniques that avatar fans had used to express their enthusiasm and love for the show were put to use in criticizing paramount"s casting decisions. For e. g. , creating livejournal and facebook pages to air grievances, coordinate protests, and share updates and information. Avatar: last airbender: they don"t say where they are explicitly from, but the series and screen captures appears asian, they never say, or often aay that they are of the japanese or any other culture.
