CMST 3K03 Lecture 6: Effects Model

32 views1 pages

Document Summary

People have resisted against the negative outcomes of media violence, most agree with it. Number of texts, studies, research, incalculable how many articles are on media violence. Can"t come to a consensus - no answer. Does not quite replicate: mistaking correlation or methodological errors for causation, entertainment media is privileged, news media disregarded when it comes to the issue of media violence. Criticism and research is selective: assumes superiority to masses, not researcher"s vulnerability to effects of media (ignored, unconcerned with meaning of representations. Differences in how audiences interpret/respond to the violence and what the meaning truly is in context: not grounded in any consistent or theoretical perspective. Yet there is evidence to suggest that consuming entertainment media violence can make audiences more aggressive or violent (aggressive stimulation/catalytic theory).
