COLLAB 2D03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: X Chromosome, Paramesonephric Duct, Klinefelter Syndrome
Document Summary
Gender: psychological state/sense of being female or male, as influenced by cultural concepts of gender appropriate behaviour, distinct from anatomic sex, which is based on the physical difference btw males and females. Gender typing: process where male and females (note: used to be defined as children) acquire behaviour that is deemed appropriate to their sex. Sexual differentiation: process by which males and females develop distinct reproductive anatomy. What can occur if this process is disrupted or does not fully evolve/develop: 23rd pair is the sex chromosomes, x or y begins to assert itself at the 7th week. If the why is not present, mullerian ducts continue to develop, if it is present mullerian ducts develop into wolffian ducts: the y chromosome is the male reproductive blueprint, carries mullerian inhibiting hormone. Klinefelter syndrome: a sex chromosomal disorder in which a male has an extra x sex chromosome (xxy), rather than an xy pattern.
