Sex During Pregnancy
• Coitus is safe throughout the course of pregnancy until the start of labour, provided that the preg is
developing normally and there is no history of miscarriages; but … blowing in the vagina should not
happen for risk of embolism
• Generally:
o 1st trimester: sex drive down
o 2nd trimester: sex drive up
o 3rd trimester: sex drive down
Postpartum Period
• Obstetricians typically advise a 6-week waiting period for safety and comfort; this depends on the
couple, and mode of delivery
o Factors:
▪ Physical changes
▪ Psychological changes
Breastfeeding & Sexuality
more likely to have sex compared to bottle-fed babies to experience:
• Most common reason women don’t breastfeed is for medication reasons, others choose to bottle feed for
personal reasons
o ↓ sex desire (↓ androgen)
o ↓ frequency of intercourse and painful intercourse
o (↓ vaginal lubrication b/c of ↓ estrogen)
o How they see their body
Additional Issues
Infertility
• intercourse for 1 year (6months 35+)
o Males - 1/3
▪ Low sperm count- most common, less than 20 mill, temperature, frequent ejaculation
▪ Irregularly shaped sperm
▪ Low motility
▪ Chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes) & STI’s
▪ Injury to testes (varicocele, etc.)
▪ Autoimmune response (deactivate sperm or woman's attacks)
▪ Pituitary imbalance and/or thyroid disease
o Female - 1/3
▪ Irregular ovulation or failure-most common, gonadotropins
▪ Chronic diseases & STI’s
▪ Endometriosis- endometrial tissue grow elsewhere – can block passage of ova
▪ Declining or problematic hormonal levels (estrogen/progesterone)
• Teratogens: environmental influences or agents that can damage an embryo
• Drugs, environmental toxins, and stress can cause and exacerbate fertility issues for both ♂ & ♀!!!

• Mature ova are surgically removed from an ovary and placed in a laboratory dish with sperm

Gestational surrogate: woman is solely the carrier for the fetus, fetus will biologically belong to the indented mother and father. Reciprocal ivf: lesbian couples, one donates and on carries.
