A scientific approach maybe 10 questions: empirical approach, the scientific method. Derived from or based on observation and experimentation. Framing the research question in the form of a hypothesis. Variables: quantities or qualities that vary or may vary, demographic variables, operational definitions. Case-study method: carefully drawn, in-depth biography of an individual or a small group of individuals. Info may be obtained through interviews, questionnaires, and historical records. The survey method: detailed study of a sample obtained by interviews and questionnaires, kinsey reports, consistency or accuracy of a measure, measure of the occurrence of degree of occurrence of an event. Validity: limitations , degree to which a test measures the constructs of traits it purports to measure, volunteer bias, faulty estimation, social-desirability response bias, differences in meanings of terms. Naturalistic-observation method: organisms are observed in their natural environments, participants do not know they are observed; no interaction.
