Lecture 1 CMST 1a03: Introduction to Communication Dr. Alex Sévigny (Winter Term, 2013)  In crisis we find opportunity, become more efficient, innovative, etc. What is communication?  "The process of human beings responding to the symbolic behaviour of others."  A Relational & Symbolic Act  Communication is a speech act  Although it may not be tangible it is still equivalent to material goods or objects  We act and create when we speak What is a “sign”?  Something you can identify  Signified concept can be expressed differently by signifier What are some of the many meanings of “communication”?  Persuade What are some types of communication?  Intrapersonal- communication occurring inside your mind, personal reflection.  Dyadic – in pairs- very intimate, most common among people and sharing that occurs between 2 people cannot occur in group of 3  Small group  Public speaking- speaking at people
