We try to make sense of how things are encoded. Frameworks of knowledge are issues discussed in class and text, things in society that constitute knowledge. Technical infrastructure is ways in which meaning is encoded. Many more tv shows have failed than have succeeded. There have been huge, unexpected hits, and uncalled for failures. Eg. success of dallas in many countries. Food is now being sold as a cultural product. Ie. hang-out in japan, snack food place in beijing. Gm are selling a lifestyle choice beyond the use for transportation. Eg. young, hip person would have a cavalier, whereas a rugged outdoorsman would have an envoy. They say nothing about what the ad is for. Have no relation to the figures that they choose to represent them. Frankfurt school were the first people to link culture and industry together. Culture industries are institutions that produce and disseminate symbols in the form of cultural goods/services as commodities: standardization combined with newness.
