ENGLISH 1A03 Lecture 1: English- Lecture One (Sept.10.15)
Document Summary
Fun things we believe about poetry: snobby and could be written simply, but isn"t. Poetry- language that is tested, remade, contorted, stretched, moulded, broken, reset, filtered, massaged and fiddled with: irrelevant to the real world- subjective experiences. Even if it"s irrelevant (like a 2nd baseman) in the real world, it"s okay. We draw feelings or newfound knowledge from irrelevance and imagination. Baseball metaphor- when you attempt something to see how far you can go. Soccer/ football/ tennis metaphor- warfare metaphor; when you go into something knowing you"ll either die or come out victorious: as soon as something is unfamiliar we consider it grumpy or bad. Built to minimize human concerns and make life easier. Don"t be afraid to say what you think. You cannot answer like the person beside you. Many ways to look at something unfamiliar. There is a truth (the author"s) as to what the poem was intended to be about.
