She cares about his well being: then the chief clerk knocks on the door. The mom describes to him how he had been saying home for the past eight night and made beautiful woodwork, read, etc: this shows gregor does nothing but his job, has no friends. The mother passes out at the sight of him. The sister is already out getting a doctor. Is look down upon: prcure of the woman.
